Go on a breathtaking journey through the history of swimwear from antiquity to the present day and discover its interconnection with political, economic and cultural developments. Exciting stories about bans, scandals and fashion developments await you and make you wonder and reflect. Get to know progressive protagonists from the world of swimming and learn more about the glamorous Hollywood acting icons. In a deep hole in the history of swimwear, it is also examined how industrialization acted as a driving force for the swimwear industry, how the process of expropriation under National Socialism took place using the example of Jewish swimwear companies, or what challenges swimwear production faces today in times of climate crisis.
The BikiniARTmuseum archive is one of the world's leading specialist archives on the history of swimwear and bathing culture. Central historical documents, advertisements, postcards, movie posters, magazines, photographs, and extensive archives from international bathroom fashion manufacturers on the topics of history, music, film, sports, lifestyle, advertising, art and fashion are stored on over a kilometer of shelves. But how did we come up with this extraordinary and spectacular collection, which has now developed into a huge swimwear archive? True to the motto “You never swim alone,” the entire BikiniARTMUSEUM team spent the last five years looking for suitable exhibits and personal stories, all of which were hidden behind the bikini. In order to gain new insights, the team not only traveled to numerous company archives, libraries, universities and city archives, but also in private attics and it was not uncommon for us to find ourselves with important protagonists of the bikini story over coffee and tea and our spa culture community began. What first began in Brazil's archives was soon continued in Baden-Württemberg archives of historic swimwear manufacturers: Come with us on a journey behind the scenes and learn all sorts of curious and spectacular things about our collection and exhibits on a tour of our museum.
Bikini is now an integral part of many women's wardrobe and a loyal companion on beaches, lakes or pools in summer. His name is firmly anchored in the collective consciousness. But who actually invented the bikini? Why was he so scandalous at the time of his invention? And what is the connection between the scarce two-part series and the atomic bomb tests carried out by the Americans? These questions will be answered as part of a lively thematic tour about the origin of the bikini: Follow in the footsteps of bikini inventor and marketing genius Louis Réard and find out why a nightclub dancer of all people went down in history as the first woman to wear the bikini. The exhibition and a specially produced film trace the development of one of the most revolutionary pieces of clothing in history from a disreputable piece of fabric to an emancipatory fashion statement. A highlight of the tour: a visit to the 13 of a total of 17 Réard bikinis that are still preserved. Among them: the “Golden Réard” — an aesthetic masterpiece and the most historically valuable bikini.
For all art lovers or who would like to become one: The “Bikini ART museum” has art centrally in its name, resulting in aspiration and commitment, a combination of fashion and art. This idea runs like a recurring thread throughout our museum: From the architecture of the exterior façade with a 10-meter tall symbolic figure on the roof, to the art garden and the exhibition content in the permanent exhibition: German celebrities such as Udo Lindenberg, Paul Paeschke, Heinrich Zille and Otto Waalkes have taken on the symbiosis of art and bathing culture and created works specifically for BAM. Internationally important artists such as Sergi Cadenas from Spain, JACE from the island of La Réunion and SARANOVELA from New York are also represented with their works of art. Colourful works from the Brazilian art scene are on display, deceptive busts of the Spanish sculpture maker Gerad Mas are found, as well as photographic works by star photographers Roger Fritz or Eduardo Rezende, as well as unique historical pieces by Bunny Yeager or George Daniell. On this guided tour, you will encounter an extraordinary collection of extravagant and sometimes unique works of art and learn more about the artists and stories behind the exhibits.
For teachers and students from a wide range of grades, the BikiniARTmuseum is an extraordinary and educational destination: The exhibition shows how swimwear acts as an indicator of social, economic and political processes. Central topics include industrialization in Baden-Württemberg, National Socialist propaganda and Aryanization of numerous companies, the emancipation movements of the 20th century and racial segregation in the USA. By illuminating swimwear and culture, students are taught the connections to important historical events. The interactive, lively guided tours can be thematically adapted to the respective curricula. Yes! Kids go to museums! Swimwear story with lots of fun and action! On a journey through the history of swimwear, the children playfully learn about the exhibition contents of the BikiniARTmuseum from antiquity to the present day. Interactive elements ensure a balance between fun and knowledge transfer. As part of an exciting museum tour, the children not only learn why grandma used to have to wear a swimming cap while bathing — as museum detectives, they actively help shape the tour. To touch and experience: You enter an authentic bathing cart and are allowed to sit in a historic beach chair. At the same time, they meet a Hawaiian surfing legend and brave female swimmers who were arrested by the police over 100 years ago for swimming in public. The history of the spa town of Bad Rappenau is also not neglected: The beginnings of textile production during industrialization and the meaning of the title “Bad” are explained. At the end, there is an exciting quiz and small gifts for all new “bath culture experts”. Our candy swing, the “bikini kicker” and, above all, the huge ball pit in our Bikini PopUp Museum make for action-packed breaks.
